Response from China

May 28th, 2009

Here is the response China Gave us. Apparently, something as simple as a Viral cold can defeat the entire stem cell procedure…AMAZING since the cells are immune boosting cells and while they state that they would give Keegan another round of treatments free, China is unwilling to assist in our travel expenses.(The thousands we spent the first time is dismissed)  I guess when Beike stated “The company is comitted to putting it’s full support in doing anything we can to help resolve this situation with Keegan” they left out “as long as we don’t have to pay out any money or refund yours” I do not call this “Full support” by any means. How disappointing….for a company who prides themselves on their successes, to simply dismiss their failures. It is obvious that the only way we are going to “get to the bottom of why keegan’s regression occurred” is at our further expense. This e-mail below is the companies CEO.

“Dear Kerry and Quinn,

Thank you again for the chance to talk with you on the phone. As I mentioned, please believe me when I say that we want to help. We first also need to get to the bottom of why Keegan’s regression occurred.

We understand your situation. Any parent facing this problem would be traumatized. And I know from all the people in Hangzhou hospital who worked with you and Keegan, that they also feel personally very hurt and sad that Keegan’s condition took a turn for the worse after all seemed to be going well.

With some exceptions, most of the 5,000 patients we’ve treated say they benefited from the treatment. This is also the case in autism and CP. We’ve never before had a report of such a regression as Keegan’s following treatment. Some regressions have occurred – where the gains made were lost, but not worse than before treatment – and these few cases suggested a link to a viral infection picked up after treatment.

Finding out what have happened in Keegan’s case requires us to look at every possibility. Some people in the US have advised you that it may be due either to the stem cells or to the use of a corticosteroid. We ask you to look at all options, anything that can help get an answer. This is no different than the procedure if a side-effect is reported after use of a drug. In the end, the answer may not be clear-cut, but we have to go at this with an open mind.

This is why we also have to include the possibility of a stem-cell-related reaction – everything is potentially responsible until it can be logically ruled out. We don’t – from our experience – believe that this is the most likely cause, and are confident that tumors are not involved. However, Keegan’s case is unique so we must check everything.

All of these things, the cells, the infection, any dietary factors and anything else you can think of (even if there isn’t an obvious link) have to be looked at. If, after looking at the whole situation, it looks like Keegan could benefit from a second series of stem-cell treatments, as mentioned on the phone, we’re also happy to make it happen.”

“Your sincerely, Sean Hu”

I have been following Keegans’ results since going to China and I am so sorry to hear that he is having regressed behaviors and physical problems. I was really hoping this treatment would be beneficial to him. If I was a nurse or Doctor, it would sound like someone made a medical error either in transcription or human. I hope that you receive some corrected help. Sounds like they need to do it over.I have really had great hopes that this is the answer to these children problems.
I know so many children that could benefit from stem cell therapy. Maybe the USA can get their testing done and can start here at home to help. Barb

Hi guys! I just read the response you received from China and I have to tell you that I find it extremely hard to believe that something as simple as a cold or a viral infection could cause Keegan to lose all his gains. That just does not make any sense.

I understand that all things must be looked at and eliminated, if possible, to discover what caused these problems but I just can’t see these regressions being caused by simple, everyday illnesses. If that were the case, most of us would not have survived beyond our 2nd birthday.

I have a friend whose granddaughter is disabled and she was considering a trip to China for stem cell treatments. Knowing that you took Keegan for treatments, she has asked my opinion about Keegan’s progress and whether I felt that he had improved enough to warrant the expense of the trip. Since her daughter and son-in-law cannot afford it she is considering paying for the trip to see if these treatments can improve the quality of life for her granddaughter but at this point I will have to advise her to wait until we have further word.

    Keep me posted.

It breaks our heart that you are all going through this. It is devasting to see Keegan regressing to a level worse than he was before after we had seen a few hopes of progress. I agree with Mom and Dad that it is very difficult to believe that a cold or viral infection could be the cause of all of this.

Keegan has never had so many issues as he has had since he returned from China. In my opinion, it is China that needs to step up to the plate and find out what went wrong and at their expense. Of course we hear about all of the successes but now I wonder exactly how many people that have been treated have gone through or are going through the same thing as Keegan.

    Keep us posted.

I can’t believe how things have changed for Keegan. I have know him for so long and seen so much progress after you returned from China and to slowly watch it all regress is heart breaking.

I was praying the information the doctors in China gave you would be the truth regarding stem cell treatment. It seems they are no different than any other “business” – tell you what you need to hear to get you in and then fail to live up to the promises.

Please keep up on the postings so we, and others thinking of doing this treatment, are aware of how your little boy is doing.

    Prays and Love,
    Patti and Terry
