A PARALYSED teenager has reached halfway in his fundraising quest for treatment that could help him walk again.

Danny Howard, 17, was hit by a car as he crossed the A174 close to Lazenby Village in 2006. He suffered multiple fractures and was left paraplegic.

But thanks to generous Teessiders he has the opportunity to walk again by undergoing stem cell treatment in China if he can find £25,000 to fund it.

Since November 2007, the community has pulled together, organising events from raffles to charity football matches to raise half the total but the teenager, who was once a keen footballer, needs another £12,000.

The potentially life changing treatment, which will take two months to complete, could raise the Eston lad’s chance of walking again by up to 40%.

Danny said: “It would be nice just to do simple things again, like lie on the grass when it’s sunny or go upstairs for a bath.

“Being able to do things like that would make all the difference and obviously being able to walk or stand up would be brilliant.”

Mum Carol, 44, who works at the Jobcentre, first saw the treatment on breakfast television, and researched clinics all over the world.

“I saw someone on television who was in a wheelchair had had it done.

“It isn’t like embryonic stem cell treatment because I don’t really agree with that, the cells that are used are Danny’s own so the body isn’t receiving anything it isn’t used to.

“It would mean a lot even for Danny to be able to stand up, instead of having to sit in his wheelchair all day.”

When the total is reached Danny and his dad Andrew, 44, a magistrates court worker, will go to Beijing Tiantan Puhuaok Hospital in China where they will stay for up to eight weeks.

Doctors will remove stem cells from Danny’s hip which will then be cultivated in a laboratory and a few days later injected via a lumbar puncture into Danny’s spine.

He added: “I am looking forward to going and seeing something different.

“Part of the treatment is strengthening the mind.

“You have to want it to work and you have to re-le arn everything, not just walking. The brain has to re-learn how to send signals to the legs.

“Plus you have to exercise before and afterwards so you’re fit and healthy.”

If improvement is shown, Danny can have repeat treatment.
