YAN Ming, LUO Zhuojing Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Xijing Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University, Xi an, Shanxi 710032, China Objective: To set up the culture system of olfactory ensheathing cells in vitro from human embryo. Method: Choosing three to six months old abortus for primary culture and during the specific culture periods the cells were evaluated by means of immunochemistry staining and the positive rate was calculated as well. The suitable period of time when the cells with the most quantity and the best proportion of positive Was found for the following employment. Result: The OECs were cultured successfully with good feasibility and repeatability. In 2 to 5 days cells exhibited macrophage, multipolar which were difficult to difer from fibroblast. In to 15 days the majority of cells became fiat bipolar, tripolar with 90 percent of positive. After 21 days they appeared as bipolar and tripolar with poor proliferation and vitality. Conclusion: Culturing OECs from embryo is feasible and it can provide a condition for restoring spinal cord injury by using OECs.
