There are no translations available. Source: AT&T ![]() (NewsUSA) - Many Americans are traveling to exotic locales, not for vacation, but to receive medical treatments unavailable in the U.S. Jason, 33, and Dana, 54, each went to Bangkok, Thailand. Jenna and Terry took their 7 month-year-old daughter, Laylah, to China. “Medical tourism” is catching on. One Thai hospital, Bumrungrad, saw 55,000 American patients in 2005 alone. Jason, Jenny and Terry, and Dana all went abroad for one reason -; American and Canadian hospitals do not offer adult stem cell or umbilical stem cell treatments. While scientists must destroy embryos to get embryonic stem cells, umbilical stem cells can be harvested at birth, and adult stem cells exist in every human’s skeletal, circulator and nervous systems. And while debate in America revolves around embryonic stem cells, other countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America have already started treating patients with adult or umbilical stem cells. Adult stem cells have helped patients with “incurable” cancers, autoimmune disorders and congenital defects improve their quality of life, if not recover. Jason had a congenital heart defect. American doctors told him he had no choice but to wait for his heart to weaken enough to put him on the transplant list. Instead, Jason went to Bangkok for adult stem cell injections. Two years later, Jason can play basketball with his children. Laylah had optic nerve hypoplasia, a condition in which the optic nerve doesn’t completely develop in the womb. Before receiving stem cell treatment, Laylah was completely blind. Now she can detect light in one eye. Doctors diagnosed Dana with angina, peripheral artery disease, hypertension and renal failure. After his stem cell treatment, he became energized enough to resume normal activities -; even vacation with his wife. As Don Margolis, the founder of the International Center for Adult Stem Cell Education (ICASCE) wrote, “Thousands of people are dying unnecessarily each month because they don’t know there are adult stem cell treatments available.” The ICASCE wants to make adult stem cell treatments available for American patients.
