There are no translations available. Source: The Hamilton Spectator An eight-year-old Hamilton boy battling a crippling degenerative disease has undergone a radical stem cell procedure in a Beijing hospital. Travis Carter had the surgery Wednesday and is recovering in his own hospital room after being moved from the ICU yesterday. The Grade 3 student at Holy Name of Mary Catholic School suffers from Batten's disease, an illness that attacks the brain cells. Over the past few years, Travis, who is confined to a wheelchair, has lost his vision, mobility and speech. He made the nearly 24-hour journey to China with his parents, Derek and Jenny, last week for the surgery during which doctors injected millions of stem cells into his brain to replace damaged cells. The family has described the surgery as Travis's last chance and their only hope. His parents have advocated tirelessly for him since he was diagnosed as a toddler.
