Condition Prior to Treatment

Dr Hakim practiced medicine in the St Paul-Minneapolis region of the USA for nearly 50 years. He spent his working hours on his feet and as a busy urologist there were a lot of hours. At 83 years today he suffers from the pains of osteoarthritis in his knees. To combat this form of arthritis he takes medication. The medication he takes to ward of the pain has led to its own complications--stomach ulcers. He takes medication for the stomach ulcers. The cycle continues.

As a clinician, he knows there are medications out there which would do more harm to a patient than good. He could reduce the amount of pain medication he is taking to reduce the ulcers. But then he would be more concerned about pains associated with his active international lifestyle. These medications aren't treating the patient. They are treating the symptoms by off-setting it somewhere else.

Dr Hakim has been to China many times to observe patients receiving adult stem cell treatments. Finally, the doctor has become the patient. Taking a nod from well-known stem cell treatments used by veterinarians on prized racing horses, Dr Hakim received injections of Mesenchymal stem cells into his knees.

Treatment in China

Seven packets of stem cells across two procedures involving direct injection of donated umbilical cord stem cells into his knees plus umbilical cord blood stem cell IV injections.

Condition After Treatment

For Dr Hakim, the discomfort of stomach ulcers along with the heightened risk of stomach cancer was not an acceptable cost for less pain in his knees. Within 15 days following the stem cell treatments, Dr Hakim dramatically reduced his reliance on osteoarthritis related medications. Within 30 days he had discontinued them altogether, his BUN (kidney function test) improved and his stomach ulcers went away. The pains of osteoarthritis were gone.

Over the next three months following the treatments Dr Hakim took Tylenol very rarely and only on days of extreme activity. After six months he began to take some of the Osteoarthritis medications again. By his recollection and by his Tylenol load today, one year later, his pain is still half of what it was prior to treatment. He plans to return to China for a booster treatment in the near future.

Describing his condition today, Dr Hakim writes "50% of the pain is gone, and it is easier to manage and less crippling. My joints are doing better, but I still need to take the medication because the stem cells are a medication like any other and should be repeated to keep the disease in control and maybe improve the results."
