A Durban mother is fighting to help her 4-year-old son who was left with brain damage after an accident.

Keanu Santos was born a healthy baby in May 2004, but a car accident later that year changed his life.

His mother, Lisa Santos, said they were on their way home from visiting friends in September that year when they had an accident.

"While we stopped at a red robot, a woman ploughed straight into the back of our car. The impact was just too strong for my little boy and he suffered a terrible injury.

"Keanu was taken to Entabeni Hospital where he was operated on to drain the bleeding on his brain. He was placed on life support and was in a coma," she said.

Santos said doctors gave him a 5 percent chance of survival.

"But being the strong little warrior he is, he pulled through," Santos said.

"He came off the ventilator and out of the coma. Every day was a battle for him, but he kept fighting and never gave up. He proved those doctors wrong."

Keanu is blind, owing to optic nerve damage, and cannot walk, talk or sit.

"Keanu is a very happy little boy who spends his days playing when he's not in therapy. When spoken to, he greets you with a very beautiful smile that can light up the room," she said.

Santos did research and found a treatment centre in China, called Beike Biotech, which offers umbilical cord stem cell treatment.

"This treatment may improve the quality of Keanu's life. Many children have gone there for treatment for blindness and can now see shapes and colours.

"A doctor has confirmed that the establishment is legitimate. All I want to do is give my child the best chance he has," she said.

The visit to the centre will consist of seven treatments over 35 days.

Santos said that she needed to raise R320 000 for the cost of Keanu's treatment, flights, accommodation, food and other expenses.

Santos will hold a dinner and dance fundraiser at Westville Country Club on July 12. Tickets cost R250 per person or R2 500 for a table of 10. An entertainment event will take place at Elarish Restaurant, on the Bluff, on Friday.

She has asked people and businesses to sponsor items to be auctioned or raffled. Schools could help with raffle ticket sales and she has set up a trust account for cash donations.
