HY Shen, Y Tang, YF Wu, DH Zhou, L Huang, R Yang, P Wang, YP Shi and XY He Department of Orthopedics, Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University; Institute of Spinal Cord Injury of Sun Yat-sen University, 107 Yanjiangxi Road, Guangzhou 510120, Objective: To observe the migratory property of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) after transplantation in adult rats semi-transected spinal cord. Method: OECs, stained by Hoechst 33342, were transplanted into the proximal end of SD rats semi-transected spinal cord at T10 level (group A, n = 12), in group B were transplanted into distal end (n = 12) and in control group (group C) were transplanted into normal spinal cord (n = 12). Distribution of OECs was observed at the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th week postoperatively. Result: OECs in group A had rostral migration, caudal migration in group B, and no migration in group C. Conclusion: OECs mainly migrate along axon in white matter, there were no speed and amount difference between rostral and caudal migration. Only small amount of OECs could get across the transected gap. OECs do not migrate in intact spinal cord.
