The medical staff used umbilical cord stem cells for the primary procedure via catheter and also gave him two umbilical cord blood stem cell transplants via IV and a stent. Ryan Nolder's Improvements Reported in the US Press - Ryan received treatment at Hangzhou's Xiaoshan Hospital to receive umbilical cord blood stem cell therapy for Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. Ryan's mother was quoted in Maysville's The Ledger Independet saying: "'In three weeks, after seven years, he was holding a paper and seeing words. It hits you that his life will be forever changed,' said Amanda Nolder. 'It's really overwhelming and changes are happening every day...' "On the flight to China, Amanda Nolder said the family flew over Tokyo, Japan. She said the lights of the city were incredible and she wanted to share it with Ryan. He looked out the window but he couldn't see it. "'He (Ryan) was so aggravated he couldn't see it,' said Amanda Nolder. "The return flight also flew over Tokyo at night. "Ryan looked out the window this time and he could see it. He could see lights and shapes," said Amanda Nolder. "He started to jump up and down with excitement. Just 30 days before he didn't see very far down. It was one of those moments, on the plane, when you're like 'Oh, my gosh.'"
