Dr Klein has been a practicing ophthalmologist in Florida for over 30 years. In 2007 he got word that a local youth was about to receive treatment in China for Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH). While there's medical evidence that spontaneous improvements were possible for people with ONH, Dr Klein admits "that's not been my experience with ONH." You don't all of a sudden "just get better when you're 13." His curiosity raised, he offered to see patients before and after they went to China. He can't prescribe adult stem cell therapy for his patients. It's not available in the US. But if a patient told him they were going he wouldn't throw them out of his clinic and he wouldn't accuse them of being foolish. Based on what he found he would tell it like it is. Three years later and many patients have contacted him for their pre-travel check-up. “It’s not a magic bullet,” he says, “you’re not going to see 20/20.” But “if you can keep somebody from going blind and becoming a ward of the state for the rest of their lives… that’s a good investment. “It’s nice to be able to see 20/20, but that’s just not in the cards for some people. But making them independent, being able to read print rather than using Braille, so they can function alone, so you can go to the bathroom by yourself--that means a lot.” Click on the picture above to watch the English version of the video or check out one of the subtitled versions below.
