NAME: Claire COUNTRY: U.S.A
AGE: 6 DIAGNOSIS: Septo-Optic Dysplasia
REASON FOR COMING FOR TREATMENT: Claire was born with Septo-optic Dysplasia (SOD), a disorder similar to Optic Nerve Hypoplasia that results in an underdeveloped optic nerve and lack of sight. While Claire's parents had tried other treatments such as strabismus surgery, nothing had a significant effect on her sight. After reading in the news the good results other children with SOD were getting from stem cell treatments, her parents decided to bring Clarie to China.
TREATMENT: Umbilical cord stem cell and nerve growth factor injections with rehabilitation therapy
BEFORE THE TREATMENT: Before the treatment started, Claire's vision was very limited. She only had light perception in her left eye and could only see objects about 1 foot in front of her and only when they were very high contrast. She also could not distinguish between colors.
AFTER THE TREATMENT: After coming to China for stem cell treatments, Claire had significant improvements in her vision. The first new thing she was able to do was distinguish between different colors. She could identify 5 different colors, with some confusion between red, orange and yellow. Also, Clarie has started to track bright sources of light and can tell her mom if the light is left, right, up or down. She has also started to identify objects from about 5 feet away if they are large and high contrast. Her parents are excited about what Claire has already achieved and can't wait to see what she will do in the future.
