Keith Graf
NAME: Keith Graf

COUNTRY: Canada

AGE: 44

DIAGNOSIS: Spinocerebellar Ataxia 2 (never diagnosed but runs in the family)

REASON FOR COMING FOR TREATMENT: The patient was aware of the degenerative symptoms associated with ataxia, some of which were beginning to afflict him. Sought treatment early so as to minimize their potential effects.

TREATMENT: Umbilical Cord Stem Cell and Nerve Growth Factor Injections with Rehabilitation Therapy.

START OF TREATMENT: April 22, 2006

BEFORE THE TREATMENT: Mild symptoms included deterioration to the patient's balance, making walking difficult. He often reported a need to concentrate on his coordination before taking steps. In the videos 'Before 1 & 2' he is unsteady in physiotherapy, though can sidewalk along level ground unsupported. Other coordination problems include the inability to touch his nose rapidly and accurately when not concentrating on the motion. Very optimistic, good mental well-being.

AFTER THE TREATMENT
(May 22, 2006): The patient exhibited definite improvements in balance, visually perceptible in the video series 'After', in which physiotherapy sessions his stance has become more relaxed and his walking more fluid, particularly when walking backwards, which he does unassisted and up an inclined surface. Regarding these improvements, the patient described a difference (decrease) in the amount of concentration it would require to make certain movements. This was not limited to his walking; he also describes tacit improvements in his ability to touch his nose, and reports an increase in confidence when carrying liquids. The patient, "Really noticed a difference after the first injection," (video 'After 1'). The interviewing staff perceived him as being more aware and with 'less glassy' eyes later into treatment.

China Stem Cell News Note: Keith’s condition had progressed the least of all of his relatives (in total six) who were treated. His condition was mild but he was still able to notice the effects of the treatment.
