Hypoxic Birth - Cerebral Palsy

Reason for Coming for Treatment

Ella was born at full term, but she endured a difficult birth during which she required emergency resuscitation. Ella's brain was deprived of oxygen for a short period of time resulting in hypoxic brain injury which later lead to cerebral palsy. During the first few months of her life, she suffered from frequent seizures and had highly fluctuating tone throughout her body. Three months later her seizures largely ceased with only rare relapses. Although she was developmentally delayed, she made steady progress  and began interacting with others. Her parents brought Ella to the best physical therapy centers around the world in an effort to treat her condition. Despite being an inquisitive and happy child, and making some progress with therapy, her parents wanted to give Ella the best chance to overcome her physical limitations. After talking with other parents who had brought their children to China for stem cell treatments, they decided stem cell treatment in China would be the best option for Ella as well.

Treatment

Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Transplants, Cord Serum combined with Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Therapy.

Condition Prior to Treatment

Before coming to China for treatment, Ella's main deficits were in motor control. She had high tone in her upper body and low tone in her lower body making it difficult for her to move around and manipulate objects. She was unable to roll over or sit up on her own. Her movements tended to be erratic and uncontrolled. She had learned to use her upper body, despite its high tone, to accomplish some tasks. For example, she was able to grasp objects placed at the end of her outstretched arms but was unable to pick up anything close to her body. Her right arm was worse than her left in this respect. Besides movement difficulties, Ella had some problems with eating and controlling her mouth and tongue. She could eat soft food by herself, but she dribbled and her tongue movement was limited. Her parents also felt her appetite was not as good as it should have been and that she was not getting enough nutrition to develop fully.

Condition After the First Treatment

Ella and her parents first came to China in March of 2008. While in China, one of the first things they saw prior to the initial course of stem cell treatment was a dramatic increase in her appetite. As the treatments progressed, Ella's overall tone decreased, especially in her right arm. She became more flexible, had a greater range of movement and started to 'kick around' in the bed more than she had before. She began to roll on her own in the mornings - usually from her back to her side. Her parents also woke up one morning to find her sleeping on her side, which she had not done before the treatment. Her core strength also improved, facilitating increased ability to sit and do assisted standing for longer times. After they returned home from treatment, Ella continued to progress rapidly and her previously skeptical therapists were amazed to see the improvements that Ella was now making.

Condition After the Second Treatment

Ella's family came back for a second treatment in November of 2008. While at the hospital they saw further improvements in Ella's motor control, particularly her control of her hands. She was able to pass objects back and forth between her hands whereas before she had only held objects in her left hand. Her core strength and leg control has also improved to the point were she was using a walker to get around, giving her more independence to explore and explore.

The Badrudin's have returned for a third treatment in the spring of 2009 and are planning another trip in the fall.
