Condition Before Treatment

Septo Optic Dysplasia is a congenital condition which occurs due to the underdevelopment of the septum pellucidum and optic nerve, both of which are located on the underside of the brain. This generally results in vision impairment and can also cause hormonal problems. In Keiran's case he had only slight light perception, with the vision in his right eye being slightly stronger than his left eye. His mom, Hayley tells us that “before the first treatment he had light perception, and could kind of shadow count out of his right eye. But nothing out of his left, just light perception. Whereas now he can see the letters out of both.”

After learning about stem cell treatment on the internet and reading all the information they could find about treatment in China, Keiran and his family decided to make the trip there in November, 2009 and once again in August, 2010.

Treatment in China

Keiran has come to China twice for stem cell treatment. Both times he received adult stem cell injections along with acupuncture, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Condition After Treatment

After their first round of stem cell treatments, Keiran began to see changes in his vision which continued to advance after he returned home. Hayley said that “after treatment number 5 he started to see letters out of his right eye. They were quite large in size and quite close to his face. His left eye, which before only had light perception, he could start using it for shadow counting fingers quite close to his face which was a good improvement.

"And then when we got home it kind of moved further. He could start seeing letters a little bit further away out of the right eye, and he could start seeing letters out of his left eye.”
