There are no translations available. Source: WHPTV By Melissa Medalie A York County family is traveling to the other side of the world with the hopes of buying their daughter a second chance on life. Shawna Weil, 21, suffered a severe brain injury four years ago during a terrible car crash near her home in Stewartstown. She can't talk or walk, but she's made some progress that gives her family hope of the potential for recovery. "Her brain is constantly repairing itself, stem cells may help it repair faster so maybe we're looking at ten years down the road Shawna's a functional person, it's better than twenty years and it's worth the money," said her mother Lorraine Weil. Next month the Weil's are making the nearly 8,000 mile journey to China so Shawna can receive a series of stem cell treatments. Shawna will receive the cells through an intravenous line and spinal cord injections over a two month period that could jump start the healing process in her brain. The procedure isn't available in the U.S. because the government says there's no proof that it's safe or effective. But the Weil's believe there's no harm in trying, and it can only help Shawna's situation. "She's consistently displayed progress that hey, I'm in here, but I can't help myself so you guys have to help me, so that's what we're going to do," said Weil. The trip and treatment in China will cost nearly $70,000. The Weil's are holding a fundraising dinner this Friday night. It's from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. at the Naylor Wine Cellars in Hopewell Township, York County. Tickets are $30 a piece. For tickets call Lorraine Weil at 993-2925.
