Condition Prior to Treatment

At birth Austin appeared to be a normal healthy child. After five weeks he suffered a serious bleed and swelling of his brain requiring extensive surgery. The cause of the brain bleed was determined to be a Vitamin K deficiency. Following birth he had not received a standard Vitamin K injection.

He was given a 1% chance to live by his doctors.

Austin received two one-day stem cell treatments in Mexico prior to coming to China for treatment using Beike's stem cells. This Mexican treatment involved subcutaneous injections of cell into his abdomen.

Before leaving, Jenny told us she "knew it wasn't a miracle... but any little bit is huge for these kiddos."

Course of Treatment

In 2008 Austin received six packets of umbilical cord blood stem cells in 2008. Two were delivered via IV injection and four were delivered via lumbar puncture (spinal injection). Austin received physical therapy, occupational therapy, electrical stimulation and acupuncture on a daily basis during treatment.

Condition Following Treatment

Catching up with the family in 2010, over two years after Austin received adult stem cell treatment in China Jenny told us she wanted to return to China for Austin to receive more treatment.

During Austin's stem cell treatment, his mother noticed him become more aware of his environment and pickier about his food. Jenny believes the stem cells "awakened his taste buds... because he started refusing all the baby food" he had been eating previously.

Following treatment Austin reduced his seizure medication and took to laughing and moving around more. Whether or not he could see prior to his stem cell treatment in China is unknown but now in lit rooms he's attentive to people walking around.

Comparing improvements between the single-day treatments in Mexico and the month-long treatment in China, Jenny said that in Mexico "we saw a little bit and we definitely don't regret it. But I think we saw more in China. I think that it's a longer and more intensive process."

Summing up the stem cell treatment in China, Jenny said "I think that if you could get it like every six months... if we could do it here and get even one or two shots every month... I just think of what amazing results you might have."
